Caretaker – Part Time
Sheffield
Monday to Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm
We are seeking a reliable and practical Caretaker to support the day-to-day upkeep of a busy residential site. This role is primarily focused on maintaining high standards of cleanliness and effective waste management, while also supporting basic site inspections, minor maintenance reporting, and general operational needs.
The position involves lone working for the majority of each shift and would suit someone who is organised, safety-conscious, and comfortable working independently while taking pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-presented environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily cleaning of communal areas, including corridors, stairwells, entrances and shared facilities, ensuring these spaces are kept to a consistently high standard. You will manage both internal and external waste areas, including bin rotation, litter picking, and maintaining refuse areas so that they remain clean, organised and compliant with site standards. Any persistent misuse of waste facilities or recurring issues will be reported promptly to management.
You will carry out routine visual inspections of the building and surrounding grounds, identifying and reporting maintenance issues to the Facilities Manager in a timely manner. Where appropriate, you may also undertake minor non-technical tasks and support contractor access to the site when required.
Health, safety and compliance are central to this role. You will assist with basic health and safety checks, support fire safety procedures through visual inspections and issue reporting, and ensure safe working practices are followed at all times, particularly when working alone. Any hazards or safety concerns must be escalated immediately in line with site procedures.
As part of the wider site team, you will respond politely and professionally to basic resident queries, maintain a visible presence during working hours, and contribute to providing a safe, clean and well-maintained living environment for all residents.
You will be expected to follow established lone working procedures, report any concerns appropriately, and maintain regular communication with site management where required.
Person specification
The ideal candidate will be reliable and punctual, with a practical and organised approach to their work and strong attention to cleanliness and detail. You will be comfortable working independently for long periods and have a basic understanding of health and safety requirements. Clear communication skills are essential, enabling you to interact effectively with colleagues, contractors and residents.
Previous experience in caretaking, cleaning or facilities roles would be advantageous, as would experience working within residential or HMO environments, although this is not essential as full training will be provided.
Additional information
This is a part-time position with regular weekday hours. The role is paid in line with statutory requirements and includes full site induction and training.
